Down the rabbit hole

A bit more than the basics

If you play Magic, you are familiar with the terms types, subtypes, power, toughness, etc. Mana curve may be something new, but also something you can Google or find in Youtube.

But, part of the Analysis you can find here depends on new concepts: paragraphs; part-of-paragraphs (pop's); parts and; entities.

So, if you want to take advantage of these deeper analysis, keep reading.

Wait! One at a time.

Paragraph: cards text are broken into paragraphs, which may be keyword abilities paragraphs (like "Flying"), activated effect paragraphs (like "{T}: Add {G}") or simply effect paragraphs (whatever does not fit into the other categories).

Pop: Furthermore, abilities paragraphs can be broken into ability (Cycling) and ability complement ({2}). Not all abilities have complements, but some do. Ability and ability complement are both pop's, part-of-paragraph. Activated effect paragraphs may also be broken into activation cost pops (there may be more than one) and activated effect pop. Effect paragraphs are note broken into pops.

Why stop there?

Part: Ability complements, activated effects and effects are further analyzed and broken into the following parts: condition, intensifier, effect. It's better to use an example: "[Whenever you cast a spell], [you gain 1 life] [for each spell you've cast this turn]" (Aetherflux Reservoir). The 3 elements between brackets [] are, respectively, [condition] [effect] [intensifier].

Entities: These are relevant things in Magic which are detected in the cards texts: TYPES, SUB/SUPER TYPES, MANA symbols, power/toughness (PT) increases and decreases, ZONES (graveyard, library, hand); ABILITY, COLOR, STEP (turn steps).

It is important to say (DISCLAIMER): part of the pre-analysis that detect all the above is done through machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques, which are not always 100% accurate. So, expect to find some incoherence sometimes. For example: exile may sometimes not be recognized as a ZONE entity, because it was thought to be the verb exile (like in "Exile target creature").

Well, now: have fun! If you would like to have your deck available here for analysis, just write us a message.

Wait still a moment! Why is this all useful?

I am glad you asked. Well, analyzing and building a (good) deck is a complex task that involves optimizing multiple criteria. For example power, speed, synergy, versatility, offensiveness, defensiveness, resiliency, consistency, controlability.

We think it is rather hard to quantify all those criteria today, based on the data we are used to have about cards: manaCost, power, toughness, colors and types. So, we are trying to enhance our human capacity for analysis through intelligent use of computational techniques.

For example, if we can now count how many cards in a deck have the subtype Spirit appearing in other cards intensifier parts, we can now objectively measure the sinergy a Spirit card would have on this deck.

We are sure we have not even scratched the surface of the possible ways we can analyze a deck and we are anxious to see what you will do with this tool. So, we put a lot of effort into making this as much interactive and explorable as possible. Go check it out!
